Everything from the contents to the cover to the binding were designed and crafted to tell the story of Kubo Shu, a Japanese paper cutting artist. The cover acts as a frame for a sample of his work which is laser cut from the same black paper that the artist uses. Readers have the opportunity to take the sample apart by flipping pages and seeing how the artist’s work is created through layering. Within the text, Kanji and type interact in image captions as well as in chapter titles. The design combines traditional techniques of binding with modern modular layouts to capture the spirit of Kubo Shu’s work.
After the book was fully designed, it was revisited in digital form as a web experience. You can view the site below, but it is best viewed on desktop browsers at least 1064px wide.
